The Basalt Thrift Store is staffed with our own community’s volunteers who are professional in many diverse areas. Our finishing carpenters will take furniture in need of repair and reclaim them for resale. All clothing will be mended, cleaned and ready for wear by our retired local ladies. Our retired architects and contractors from the community will be able to assist and oversee the items reclaimed from salvage efforts and offer back to the community building features at amazing prices. Canoes, kayaks, bicycles and reclaimed sporting goods will be available.
The money generated will be put back into the community in areas focusing on sustainable education and centered on nutritional and health youth programs. Imagine a sustainable greenhouse in our community used as a learning center for our children.The children will grow organic produce in a sustainable environment and utilize the food in their school lunch programs. Their work is accredited. From the beginning “worm farms” that produce the soil to the final product on the lunch table our community’s children will grow with both an awareness of need and an ability to contribute to our valley’s sustainability. This process alone from beginning to end immerses our children deep into the community structure of business economics while practicing necessary sustainable habits that can only benefit our Valley’s future.
The Greenhouse is only one dream that the Basalt Thrift Store can help the community realize. Other immediate concerns are in assisting new and worthwhile efforts that are committed to the community’s best interests and/or support the nourishment of our youth. Because of our commitment to provide you with a thrift store like no other we will extend our service to regular pick up dates where we will come to take away any and all items the community residents of Pitkin, Eagle, and Garfield County wish to donate.
Our service to the community is open to any organization with a “seed” need to improve, begin, or expand their mission as long as it is for the betterment of our youth. It is the community’s donations that are reclaimed and reworked to resell back to the community at an affordable cost for reuse and enjoyment.
There is so much waste in our American throw-away lifestyle – but reclaiming is so exciting and through the Basalt Thrift Store this reclaiming will provide funding for many enriching community efforts and activities.
The Basalt Thrift Store has opened July 12, 2008 and is providing a valuable service to your (our) community. We are a recognized Non-Profit with the I.R.S.
Please help define Basalt further as a sustainable community both in terms of reclaimed materials and reclaimed community assets in our retired volunteers.
